Damascus steel, the very words conjure images of legendary blades with near supernatural qualities. Pattern welded steel has been for centuries equated with weapons of the highest quality, reserved for royalty and persons of means. Blades of Damascus indeed possessed uncommon qualities and were not for use by common folk. They were the product of the highest level of the armorer's skill and craft, it's secrets guarded jealously. In our own time, the craft of pattern welded steel, after having been all but forgotten now thrives and enjoys a popularity unknown in times past. It is only through the efforts of the most dedicated craftsmen that this unique discipline survives in our time. But how are these intricate and endlessly varied patterns produced? Finding answers to that question has occupied my curiosity for many years now as I have sought to uncover its mysteries. As it turns out, it is actually a good deal simpler than one might think. The entire phenomenon of patterning is controlled by the dynamics of curvilinear distortion in laminated structural arrangements. This having been said, all that remains is to identify as many potential distortion arrangements as possible, arranging them in some logical sequence.
